Research on Romeo and Juliet

Romeo and Juliet can be plausibly dated to 1595. Shakespeare must have written the play between 1591 and 1596. The earliest date is considered to be too early, because of Shakespeare’s writing style in the play. The later date allows the necessary time for the compilation of the manuscript used to print the first ‘bad’ quarto in early 1597. Romeo and Juliet relates most closely to a group of plays usually dated to the period 1594-1595, Love’s Labor’s Lost, A Midsummer Night’s Dream, and Richard II.

The first ‘bad’ quarto was probably printed between late 1596 and March 1597, by the printers John Danter and Edward Allde. Danter was raided by the Stationers’ Company and his presses destroyed in February or March 1597, for printing books without their authority. The second ‘good’ quarto was printed by Thomas Creede for Cuthbert Burby in 1599. Burby transferred his copyright in Romeo and Juliet to Nicholas Ling on 22 January 1607. Ling in his turn transferred the copyright to John Smethwick on 19 November 1607. The third quarto did not appear until 1609, when it was printed by John Windet for John Smethwick. The fourth quarto, printed for Smethwick by William Stansby, appeared in 1622. John Smethwick also published the fifth quarto of 1637, printed by R. Young.

summary for act 1 scene 1 on romeo and juliet homework

As the play starts, we see Sampson and Gregory, two Capulet servants, scoffing the Montagues saying,”That shows thee a weak slave, for the weakest goes to the wall.” They go on mocking the maids saying that they would either cut off their heads or take their virginity. At that point, Abram and another Montague servant enter and argue with the Capulet servants, but Benvolio, Capulet’s nephew and Romeo’s cousin, enters and tells the servants to get out their swords and to prepare for battle. At that point, Tybalt enters and fights Benvolio creating panic around the city of Verona, but they’re stopped by the Prince of Verona.

He tells the two and their families that if there is another disturbance, there would be dire consequences for them.

Later, Benvolio meets with Romeo, who has recently broken up with a girl named Rosaline and he is not dealing with it well because he thought they had a special connection. Benvolio tells him that he should give up on her and should find someone else who would be a lot better suited for Romeo but he still disagrees and thinks cupids arrow hit them both.

This scene is based on a modern version of Act 1 Scene 3 of ‘Macbeth’.

It’s set in a class room (science lab) after a school day at 5:00 PM. We start with the witches dressed up as janitors to disguise them selves so no one won’t ever find out who they are. Two teachers then come in and find out their destiny. After the Janitors leave, two other teachers come in to give in good news of a promotion.

Here is the scene and read it yourself. It’s really good and can possibly be better then the original.

Act1 Scene 3

(IN A ROOM WITH THE GENITORS.)

Janitor 1: Where have you been sister.

Janitor 2: Killing swine.

Janitor 3: Sisters stop fighting. We must get ready for the arrival of the new principal at all cost no matter what happens.

Janitor 2: Just as we planned. Right?

Janitor 3: Of course.

Janitor 1: Quickly. In comes Mr Macbeth and Mr Banquo.

(ENTER MR MACBETH AND MR BANQUO WATCHING THE GENITORS SCRUB THE CLASSROOM FLOOR.)

All Janitors: What are your orders, sir.

Mr Macbeth: Only the principal has authority to do that.

Janitor 1: You will become a form tutor and deputy vice principal but then, you’ll become the principal.

Mr Banquo: What on earth are you talking about.

Janitor 2: He will become principal and your son will too. Fleance, was it.

Mr Banquo: How on earth do you know this would come true.

Janitor 3: Let’s just say,”we’re psychics”.

(GENITORS LEAVE ROOM AND MR ROSS AND MR ANGUS ENTER.)

Ross: MR MACBETH!!!!!

Mr Macbeth: What is it Mr Ross.

Angus: We have been sent from Principle Duncan to give a message of your promotion.

Mr Macbeth: Promotion?

Ross: Yes. You are, from now, the form tutor of Form Cawdor and the new deputy vice principle of Dunsinane High.

Mr Macbeth: Thank you so much. I will not disappoint the principle.

(MR ROSS AND MR ANGUS EXIT THE ROOM.)

Mr Macbeth: This is it. My big break. My wife will be pleased with the news and the money raise. We’ll even move to a different country like England or France or even Hawaii.

Mr Banquo: Calm down. This promotion can easily be taken away like it was given. It’s getting late and I have some marking to do. Lets go.

Mr Macbeth: Your right. See ya.

(MR MACBETH AND MR BANQUO EXITS.)

Macbeth’s diary

Dear diary,

I am writing to inform that my plan to kill Banquo is at a good level. This is very bad since I have been friends with him all my life and my best mate being gone and that would be like losing a brother I never had. Although this would happen, I have to make sure that Banquo’s son, Fleance, doesn’t become king and him and his wife don’t make another baby. If this happens, they would take the thrown away from me. Since I can’t kill them myself, I have manipulated some assassins to kill Banquo and his family. If this idea goes well, there would be no one to be able to take my air to the throne.

As this event goes on, I feel second thoughts. As I said, if he dies, it would be like I lost a brother so I don’t really want to do this but I have to protect my throne. Me and my wife, Lady Macbeth (born from royalty), got ready for our feast with Banquo and his family and had a long talk about the murder that was set up and how I’m having cold feet and don’t want to do it but like always, my wife will find a way to manipulate me into doing something like the last time she did it, I ended up killing King Duncan-the previous king before me-so I can have the throne.

Dairy entry of the war

Dear diary,

I have just witness the war and it was ecstatic. There lots of blood and gore and I’m only 13.  There was this one particular person who I that was the best which was as man called Macbeth.

He was amazing with his sword fighting skills and his great war abilities. Although, he was a bit too violent especially with that war paint being covered with blood all over his face. Besides from that, I’ve heard that Macbeth was valiant and a true gentleman. He’s also married to Lady Macbeth and is also told to be the kings cousin. He was the best soldier I’ve ever seen.

The way he moved that sword though. It was as amazing as if he were a swordsmen his whole life. One day, when I’m older and join the army, I want to ask him to teach me all he knows.

A weird thing, though, is that the Norwegians were late snail. The moment the came, the army of King Duncan’s were as energised as a lightning bolt striking down to earth light-speed. It was alarming that they were late but at least there was more fighting and killing and gore.

Oh no. Need to stop now. Mum’s coming.

Write soon,

Yonatan.

Director letter about the opening of Macbeth

Dear Bob,

I have just been given the task of directing my own version of Macbeth. I have been wishing this for all my life to direct a Shakespearean play and I finally got the chance. To bad that I couldn’t do a 21st century version of Romeo and Juliet.

Any who, lets get back to the letter.

I planned for the first scene to start with the witches. Although Shakespearean, I wanted the movie to be more modern. So, the witches are teenage girls and the have just came out of school into a secret room in a grave yard. All of a sudden, the girls turn into witches. They go from the prettiest person in the world to ugly adults that can’t get plastic surgery. Then, they get a pot ready to do a spell. After that, they say their lines starting with the tallest witch, then to the medium sized and finally to the small witch. They start cursing a guy that looks exactly like Macbeth.

The props I’ll be using is the following: a bottle of water used as perfume for the witches curse, wigs for when they transform to their normal witch form, a stove, brooms and long spoons and some fake eyeballs and other ingredients witches would use.

I am planning to properly start with the original Macbeth story and then say that they were cursed to look good looking for 7 hours from 9:00 am. Then it shows how the would get their revenge one day.

This can be mysterious but drama full at the same time. I hope you like the beginning of my movie but it’s still a working progress.

Hope to write soon,

Jay
